Nap Length Decoded: The One Number on a Roller Cover That Decides Your Finish

A roller cover can look pretty basic sitting on a shelf. Just a tube with fabric around it, right? Not really. When you're choosing roller covers for painting , one of the first things worth checking is the nap length. That little number tells you how much material the cover can hold and, more importantly, what kind of surface it is meant to handle. Pick the wrong one and you can end up with uneven coverage, too much texture, drips, or a finish that looks nothing like what you had in mind. The paint isn't always the problem. Sometimes, it’s the roller. What Does Nap Length Actually Mean? Nap is simply the thickness or height of the fibers on a roller cover. You'll commonly see sizes like 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch and 1-inch. The basic idea is pretty simple: shorter nap for smoother surfaces, longer nap for rougher ones.
